Summer in the City

With 25 degree days of lounging in the sunshine-y parks, daily bike rides to the nearest gelato bar, and people crowding the local patios, I think it’s safe to say that summer is well on its way. With NXNE kicking off, the MMVA’s taking over the city, and World Cup madness, Torontonians have been living up these last days of spring like there’s no tomorrow.

The most exciting news to hit Toronto (pardon me, CANADA) this summer?? TOP SHOP joining forces with Ossington’s favourite boutique, Jonathon + Olivia!!! This Toronto staple will be carrying Top Shop brand apparel, shoes, and accessories. They are renovating an 800 square foot addition in the back, which will be the permanent location of Top Shop Toronto. To kick off this exciting new venture, owner Jackie O’Brien teamed up with brand new hot spot Parts and Labour for a launch party Thursday night. Since its grand opening this past month, the restaurant/bar/music venue, owned by the same team who brought Queen West-ers The Social and Odd Fellows, has been host to a plethora of exciting industry parties, and this was no exception.

Everyone came out to celebrate the launch, and who wouldn’t want to, what with drinks flowing, servers passing around trays of taste-bud tingling charcuterie, and a table full of fresh oysters. From TV personalities such as 90210′s Shenae Grimes and MTV and Much Music VJs to local designers Ashley Rowe, Philip Sparks and Amanda Lew Kee, the spiffy-looking party-goers mingled to the tunes DJed by MTV VJ Dan Levy.

After filling myself with the satisfyingly sweet drinks and enough brie and crackers to count as a meal, I headed over to the newest addition to the trendy King West scene, the Thompson Hotel, for their opening party. Stepping into the sleek foyer of the brand new space, I couldn’t help but be amazed by its size. With five bars located throughout the hotel and a gorgeous rooftop patio, the Thompson is guaranteed to be a hot spot for the King Street set.

As I made my way towards the main bar, I literally ran right into the hottest team in Canadian design since Dean and Dan Caten, the boys behind Greta Constantine, Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong. After saying my hellos I made a beeline for the drinks and even more yummy goodies, before spotting twin sisters Caillianne and Samantha Beckerman who stood out with their long platinum manes, and complimentary outfits. Two halves of the design team behind Beckermans, the girls also write the cheeky blog thebeckermanbiteplate.

The excitement of the night was scored by the sometimes bootylicious, sometimes rock ‘n roll tunes being played by Ellen’s very own DJ Tony Okungbow. But hold on just one minute… My favourite spotting of the night… Well alright, I’ll admit it…. Tween blogging sensation TAVI GEVINSON!!! Who knew that a pint-sized, 13 year old could spark so much excitement, but I was admittedly shaking in my studded boots.

The weekend only got better with Iggy Pop and the Stooges taking the stage Saturday at Dundas Square as headliners of NXNE, concerts at every venue in Toronto and an MMVA after-party at every downtown bar Sunday night. Only a few of the many reasons why I love me some summer, but they’re damn good ones. So get outside and enjoy, kids. Play safe!
