TOMS – A Shoe that Heals

I am quite stunned with myself that I have never written about TOMS Shoes before today. It is a company and a product that in my opinion has really changed the way we think.

As the website states “TOMS Shoes was founded on a simple premise: With every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for One. Using the purchasing power of individuals to benefit the greater good is what we’re all about. The TOMS One for One mission transforms our customers into benefactors, which allows us to grow a truly sustainable business rather than depending on fund raising for support.”

I remember first hearing about founder and Amazing Race Alum Blake Mycoskie’s idea back in the summer of 2007, when it was a grassroots movement and they were selling one model in five or six different colors. Let’s fast-forward three years, and TOMS has given over 600,000 pairs and counting to children in need all over the world. I was so taken with this company that I applied for an internship position back in 2007. I ended up getting the position after a couple of rounds of interviews, but had to decline because I was two semesters away from graduating and my mother feared that I would never go back to school (Probably right!). Needless to say that I, along with my entire family, am huge supporter of TOMS shoes. Each family member owns at least one pair. I am even making all the employees at my “business” wear them as part of the uniform. They now come in a variety of colors, prints and models made out of organic and canvas materials (for both men and women).
