Green Beauty

As a sustainability student AND a fiend for fashion, I am constantly scratching my head, trying to rationalize purchase upon purchase. But one area in which I can constantly be green, is beauty. Whether in packaging, choice of ingredients and processes, or support of external causes, beauty companies are setting an eco-friendly example. Here are some of my favorite green beauty products:

1. LANCOME JUICY TUBES : To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the brightly-coloured sheer favourites, Lancôme has just launched Juicy Tubes 100% Natural Origin, a limited-edition collection of four glosses with Hungarian honey as their main ingredient. The Juicy Tubes are preservative-free and include yummy natural flavours and colours like vanilla, apricot, and annatto, a naturally derived red pigment from South America.

2. KIEHL’S ACAI DAMAGE PROTECTING TONING MIST: In honor of Earth Day, Kiehl’s collaborated with Julianne Moore, Pharrell Williams, Jeff Koons, and Malia Jones, to raise funds and awareness for the Rainforest Alliance, dedicated to sustaining biodiversity and ensuring sustainable livelihoods. Each celebrity created a Limited Edition label for Kiehl’s Açaí Damage-Protecting Toning Mist – itself part of a skincare collection that is not only Eco Cert certified organic, but is also the FIRST SKINCARE RANGE to receive gold standard Cradle to Cradle certification – meaning that it is made with the least amount of waste from start to finish! 100% of net proceeds will be raised worldwide to benefit Rainforest Alliance with this collection.

3. BURT’S BEES: Every product in this brand’s 150-plus product range is either 99 or 100 percent natural (the “natural bar” on every label tells you the exact percentage), and most of its packaging is created from recycled materials. My favorite product is probably the Beeswax Lip Balm because it leaves my lips always super smooth, but never sticky or shiny.

4. LAVANILA LABORATORIES: Lavanila was the first company to break beauty boundaries by joining luxury fragrance with natural science. Today Lavanila delivers a new generation of 100% healthy products made with top quality natural and organic ingredients. Products are also packed with vitamins and minerals, and completely free of harsh chemicals. Additionally, true to their name, each collection is built around vanilla as the primary note. The Vanilla Coconut collection is to die for.

5. PHYTO: Phyto, which is Greek for ‘derived from plants,’ merges active plant botanicals with modern science to create formulas that get hair back to its healthiest condition (I promise!). All Phyto products are clinically tested for performance, are  naturally derived, cruelty-free, and packaged in 100 percent recyclable containers. I use Phyto 9 Daily Ultra Nourishing Botanical Cream after showering every day. It is infused with eight plant extracts and macadamia oil, and instantly nourishes and smooths hair while preventing split ends (and helping me remove my tangles without breaking a single strand of hair!)
