Gap Teeth: The New Fashion Trend

The gap-toothed effect that distinguishes the unique smiles of Vanessa Paradis, Brigitte Bardot, Madonna, Lauren Hutton, and Anna Paquin is now being embraced in the modeling industry as a high-demand physical feature.  It’s been evidenced in this season’s America’s Next Top Model where a contestant was encouraged to widen the gap between her teeth, transforming her into just another victim of fashion’s dictatorial crazes. The gap was even seen brandished all over the runways at this year’s Paris Fashion Week.

Still don’t believe me?

Fashion Television recently dedicated a segment on the gap-toothed phenomenon stating that the majority of aspiring models who walk into a casting are sporting the desired gap. In addition to caving into the pressures of the industry’s beauty standards, young girls in pursuit of a modeling career are now visiting the dentist’s chair to shave off a portion of their front teeth!

Strangely, the fashion industry is demanding an imperfect, quirky kind of beauty; seemingly models with freckles, big, frizzy hair, fair skin, and now the gaping look.

16-year old model Lindsey Wixson from Wichita, Kansas caught the eye of photographer Gabrielle Revere who praises her pouty lips and her distinct gap, yet indifferent to her childish features. Since then, Wixson’s career has skyrocketed making her the new face of Miu Miu and having had already walked the runway for Versace, John Galliano, and Marc Jacobs. Another gaptoothed chick in vogue this year is 16-year old Polish model Jac Jagaciak who already carries a long list of top designers for which she’s campaigned including Hermes, Chanel, and Calvin Klein just to name a few.
