Looking for something truly original? Something one-of-a-kind that you’re guaranteed no one else will have? Look no farther than the Craft Council of British Columbia.
I’ll admit, when I hear the word “craft” I don’t immediately get excited. Kitschy and homespun isn’t exactly my cup of tea. But the Craft Council, founded in the 1970s in order to promote the growing local art movement, is wonderful. With dozens of artists producing art, jewelry, decor, and pretty much anything else you can think of, the output seems like a well-curated collection of unique and sophisticated pieces.
The retail location, aptly named the crafthouse, is located in Granville Island. But if you don’t have the opportunity to make it out there, selected pieces are (pretty conveniently for travellers) also for sale in the Vancouver airport.
There’s a lot to love about Canadian art, and the Craft Council is definitely a good place to start.
