Ultra Menswear: Christopher Bates

There is no denying that the distinct and intricate virtuosity of European fashion is the industry’s crème de la crème. And nothing screams out opulent style and elegance better than Italian fashion does. Which is the very reason why Ultra Menswear designer Christopher Bates’ latest Spring 2010 Collection gleams with the essence of Italy’s sophisticated customs.

Bates uses a lush array of fabrics made from fine Italian wools, cotton, leather and denim to construct a Shakespearean-themed line of men’s clothing. The collection includes pale blue and pink blazers along with trousers sharply constituted, as well as a white Romeo-style blazer with black peaked lapels and contrast trimming.  One piece that stands out is a devilish white, high-collared Romeo Bomber denim jacket with a large Victorian design of Romeo and Juliet on the back. And my top favorites of the collection are a dark-washed and fitted pair of chic Milano Jeans and a very Italian Milano Bomber jacket in glossy dark blue made with refined lamb leather that looks both retro and sleek.  If I had to describe his line in just one word it would be “sexy” – the slimming fit, style and symmetry, and careful details radiates classicality and confidence. There’s even a limited edition V-neck jersey t-shirt brandishing the Italian flag colors in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Bates applies his Italian fashion sense to Ultra after having graduated from the prestigious Istituto Marangoni in Milan where he mastered his niche of designing and fabricating menswear. After two years of forging his name in Canada’s competitive market, Bates continues to “interpret European fashion at a distance,” bringing atypical clothing to Canada, “and help educate men how to dress.”

“You don’t need to wear baggy jeans,” he said.

In fact, menswear has only recently become a mainstream industry with “amazing options on the market.” He cites the famous Canadian identical twin brothers, better known as Dsquared2, as the designers he really looks up to for their innovative visions.

So, what’s in and trendy for men this summer? Think blazers. Casual blazers can be worn with almost any pieces from your Kloset and simplicity is the best way to go.
