NYE Dress

Okay, so I know that we have all been avoiding thinking about it for days, but it’s down to crunch time now and there’s no more room for dilly-dallying… New Year’s Eve fashion. As usual, there are many factors to take into consideration: evening plans, crowd, dress code (if applicable), body type, budget, personal style… you get the picture. However, the main idea always remains the same: to look and feel fabulous. Rather than think of this task as daunting, let’s remember that it has been a tough twelve months and we have the good fortune of welcoming the forthcoming year with optimism and style. So let’s put the past behind us, and grab 2010 by its shiny disco balls.

Alright, so here we go. Glamour and sex are two key elements for any New Year’s Eve look. I was never really into the whole sequin scene, so I am not going to be one to promote sequined dresses, sequined skirts, sequined shorts, sequined tops, sequined bombers, or sequined blazers – although these looks are plentifully available, always safe bets, and ensure that you will be sparkling way past the drop of the ball. There are much more unconventional and equally glamorous ways of shining your way past midnight. Below I have compiled my favorite New Year’s Eve trends.

(In)decent exposure: a little well-placed skin exposure goes a long way… think backless, one shoulder, lingering deep V. Keep in mind that sheers are a great alternative to bare skin. Not only do sheers classify as being classic, almost always in style if done correctly, the lingerie-ish feel they embody is so so sexy.

Animal instinct: ask anyone who knows me and they will confirm my affinity for furs and leopard prints… so sexy, so luxurious. I could live in them forever.

Structure: play on this season’s bold structures with a Balmain-esque dress, top, or blazer – strong shoulders, nipped waists, both bold and beautiful. Bustiers present another fashionable option this season. (Find an abundance of great affordable pieces at Zara, like the one-shoulder mini below.)

Textures: I still love leathers, feathers, fringe, lace, and all other great textural elements that you can play with to create original sexy party silhouettes. Wear leather leggings or lace tights to play up your legs; lace bras and tops for stylish sex appeal; fringe and feathers for extra oomph.
