Fashionable Waste

In the search for eco-friendly fashion alternatives, many Canadian designers are turning towards post-consumer waste to create something new. In the mid 1990’s, Julie Grieve and Mariouche Gagné created a niche for innovative recycled fashion with their brands preloved (Grieve) and Harricana (Gagné).  Just over a decade later, Natalie Meyer quickly followed suite with her line of luxury designer bags Sienna Ray.

Preloved, sister label handcut, and the children’s line me*me, all use vintage fabrics to “combine the style of the past with the energy of the future.” With flagship stores in Toronto, Montreal, and Sydney, and retail locations throughout Canada, America, Europe, and Asia carrying their lines, preloved has become an international fashion sensation.

Harricana came together when Gagné entered a design competition organized by the Fur Council of Canada. Unable to afford the new materials necessary to create a fur coat, Gagné took a weathered coat of her mothers and turned it into a new original. Harricana soon established as an exclusively recycled-fur luxury fashion line.

Meyer’s goal with Sienna Ray is to continuously produce a collection of “unique designs in palettes of equally innovating and lush leathers.” Made of the ‘waste parts’ of goat skin, salmon skin, and lamb skin, the collections beautiful shoulder bags, clutches, satchels, and accessories are anything but leftovers.
