Designers are constantly looking to the past for inspiration. Instead of buying new stuff that looks old why not buy old stuff and make it fashionable again. There is something very unique and special about vintage and second hand clothing. They have a lot of character and you can dress with uniqueness and style without putting a hole in your wallet. Both Montreal and Toronto have great vintage shopping, carrying vintage pieces from the 40s up to the 90s.

Montreal:

When looking to shop vintage in Montreal. Montreal’s trendy hip area le plateau is known for their vintage stores and trendy boutiques. You are bound to find the best vintage shops located on the streets of Mont Royal Avenue (east of Saint Laurent Blvd until Rue Saint Denis), Rue Saint Denis between Sherbrooke Street and Mont Royal Avenue, as well as a few stores scattered along Saint Laurent Blvd. My two picks of the week for Montreal are:

They have great boots, crinolines, gorgeous one-of-a-kind vintage dresses (perfect for a formal event or a night on the town), jackets and a whole bunch of amazing clutches and accessories. I myself just picked up a suede bag with fringe detailing for 20 bucks and it’s to die for…definitely a place worth checking out!

Lots of leather jackets, cool vintage dresses, shoes, boots and kitten heels mostly. Really wicked belts, and a collection of button down shirts. All items are very reasonably priced.

Toronto:

If you’re looking to go vintage shopping in Toronto, then head straight to Kensington Market (Spadina and College) and also check out Queen West. My Toronto picks for this week are:

69 Vintage: 1100 Queen St. W. ( at Dovercourt Rd.) (416) 516-0669

A place which is known to be popular amongst the hipster crowd, located in the trendy Queen West neighborhood. You can get everything from dresses and blazers to vintage footwear. Heels range from 30 – 70 bucks and boots go from around 50 – 150. Authentic vintage t-shirts (ranging from $10 – $40). The clothing is kept in remarkable condition. I have been known to find some special items at this store.

EXILE:

Kensington prices have gone up since they have gained popularity and recognition for great clothing and vintage wear. However, it is still decently priced compared to designer labels. Exile has beautifully kept vintage pieces, known for its fabulous collection of 40’s 50’s and 60’s items. This store is famed for carrying dresses, sweaters, skirts, jackets, amazing boots, clutches and other accessories. It has attracted the likes of fashion and movie stylists, celebrities and international buyers. Check it out!

For all you vintage lovers, these places should keep you busy for a while. Enjoy!
